Three-year-old boy from Tampa, Florida expected to make full recovery after receiving transplants for five organs.
MIAMI, FLORIDA UNITED STATES (DECEMBER 17, 2013) (NBC) - A three-year old Florida boy is doing well after undergoing a life-saving five-organ transplant two months ago.
Adonis Ortiz was born with a severe congenital birth defect called gastroschisis, in which the intestines protrude through a opening in the abdominal wall.While the boy's prognosis was dire, His mother, Aracelis Ortiz, had hope.
"When they told me it was gastroschisis, it was kind of a relief because I was like I have seen patients they were like 18-19 years old and they were fine. So, I was like why can't my baby be the same?"
He had his first surgery when he was only three months old. Several other procedures followed. Doctors at the University of Miami's Jackson Memorial Medical Center realized that for the boy to survive they would need to attempt a never before performed five-organ transplant.
In October, after a transplant match was found, Adonis was rushed to Miami where he received a new liver, pancreas, stomach and small and large intestines.
Doctors say the boy, who is still recovering in hospital, is expected to make a full recovery.
