USA (Next Media) -   Obese New Jersey governor Chris Christie admitted that he recently underwent an aggressive stomach surgery to treat his weight problem.

Speculated to be taking a run at the US presidency in 2016, Christie said that his decision to undergo the procedure was in order to deal with a weight problem that has stood for more than 20 years. Although he has declined to say how much weight he has lost, media outlets are saying he may have lost as much as 40 pounds since undergoing lap-band surgery in February. Christie is estimated to weigh anywhere from 300 to 350 pounds.

Lap-band surgery works by placing an adjustable silicone gastric band around the top of the stomach, making it smaller and making patients feel fuller sooner during eating. After making a small incision, the doctor places the silicon ring around the stomach. The ring is attached to an access port where a controlled amount of saline is either added or taken out to contract or expand the ring.

The procedure is recommended for people that weigh more than 100 pounds over their ideal weight target.
